Although his early ambition had not encompassed a military career, he is now very glad that he joined the army as it has given him a natural outlet for many of his talents. He has no eatings fads and says, “I eat what I get, so that wherever I go I have no problems.” His pet hates are racialism and prejudice. He hopes to travel, and is a great admirer of Israel and Japan. When he has time to spare from his many sporting activities, he enjoys listening to music.

He has visited France and Egypt and this experience has whetted his appetite for further travel later on. His hobbies are shooting, gardening and “just lying on the grass and watching the stars at night.” There is a strong streak of romanticism in him. “If I were born again, I would like to be a bird”, he says. Born in 1942 (E.G.), he is the sixth child in a family of ten children. On a recent visit to France he was particularly impressed with the French system of military instruction, and hopes that when he becomes an officer he will be able to apply some of the ideas he picked up there.

Born in 1943 (E.C.) at Merhabete, Shoa. He was educated at Prince Wossen Segede Primal School and Prince Mekonnen Secondary School, Addis Ababa. He is an excellent footballer who has represented both the Academy and his company. He also found a place in his company’s vollevball side. Adefrise-s main interests are hunting and Ethiopian music, but confesses that he also gets a great deal of enjoyment from “just playing with kids”. He hopes to be able to join an armoured unit.

Born at Mai Habar in 1943 (E.G.). Afework is the youngest child in a family of six. Before coming to MPSS and later the Academy, he was educated at Haile Selassie Secondary School, Asmara. A good sportman he has represented his company at boxina squash and athletics. Whenever time allows he enjoys riding, and thinks there is no better way to pass a quiet moment than in reading. He hopes one day to travel extensively in Ethiopia to get to know the people and the country thoroughly. After that who knows, he may get the chance to visit other countries.

Born in Nazareth, in 1943(E.C.) the second child of a family of seven, he was educated at Atse Gelawdious Primary and Secondary Schools, Before arriving at the Academy, he says. he was was not the least bit interested in games, but now he takes every opportunity to play, and is particularly fond of tennis, basketball and volleyball He’is an avid filmgoer and also likes to tramp through the country side in his spare time. He hopes one day to go to the university and obtain a degree.

Born in Shoa Province in 1945 t (E.C.) and is the eldest of a family of three. After receiving his secondary education at Shemilis Habte School, Addis Ababa, it was fairly inevitable that lie should join the army as he has several relatives who are soldiers, and he also felt that a disciplined life would benefit him. Though he plays most games, he readily admits that he is not an outstanding games player. He takes a keen interest in world affairs and deplores the emergence of “super-powers” as he feels that they tend to dominate smaller countries and that there is always the attendant danger of neo-colonialism.

The fifth child in a family of nine, was born in Gondar in 1944 (E.C.) and received his education at Tsadiku Yohanis Primary School and Haile Selassie I secondary School. An excellent sportman, he has represented his company at squash, football, volley-ball and boxing. Of a mechanical turn of mind he says, “I love fiddling with gadgets, and am seldom content until I have had them apart to see how they work”. He recently visited France where he had a thoroughly good time. He views this trip as part of a continuing process of education, and feels that a man carries on learning until the day he dies.

Born in Arussi in 1944 (E.C.). Befekadu is the youngest child in a family of three. While at the Ras Dargae school his thoughts first began to turn towards a career in the armed forces when the school was visited by some smart air force cadets. As well as being a keen basketball, volleyball and tennis player, he likes to go hunting when has an opportunity. He is keen on western music and is a geat fan of James Brown. He hopes after graduation to join an infantry unit.

Born in 1942 (EC) at Huruta in the Province of Arussi. Before joining the Academy he was educated at Nigusi Haile Melekot Primary School and Ras Dargey High School. A fine sportsman he has represented his company at football and volleyball, and took first place in the Pole Vault event in the Academy Athletic Meeting. He liopes later on to have the opportunity to qualify as an engineer

Born in 1942 (EC) at Korem. He came to the Academy from Haile Selassie I Secondary School, Asmra, is an accomplished basketball and volleyball player and has represented his company in these games. He spends a great deal of his spare time reading, but still manages to fit in his hobby of photography. After being commissioned he hopes to join an armoured unit.

In contrast his leisure moments are spent quietly listening to Indian music and reading. He hopes later on to have the opportunity of seeing foreign parts.

Born in 1944 (EC) at Shambu in Wellega. The eldest child of a family of four, he attended Shambu Primary School and Haile Selassie I Secondary School, Lekemit. He had an earlier ambition to be an airforce pilot, and still hopes that after graduating he may find a place in army aviation. Ensemeru plays most games and has represented his company at gena and football. A good athlete, he cornpeted in the 1500 and 800 metres in the last athletics meeting. His favourite passtimes are riding, hunting and listening to music.

Popularly known as “Teklay” first saw the light of day in Maichew in Tigre in 1945 (EC). The second chilcin a family of three he attended Shemeles Habte Primary and Secondary School and MPSS. A good games player, he has represented his company at football and vallleyball. He is keen horseman who rides whenever he has the chance- Amidst his sporting activities he still manages to find the time to pursue his hobbies of stamp collecting and photography. He visited Fance recently and this has whetted his appetite for further travel.
It is believed that Colonel Fantahun Temtimie was killed in action.

Born in Arussi in 1943 (EC), the fourth child of a family of five. After leaving the Ras Dargey Secondary School he came to the Academy because, as he says, “I never wished to be an office worker”. He plays most games but describes himself as only “average” at them. Fesese is very fond of music, and likes nothing better in a quiet moment than to curl up in a chair and listen to Ethiopian music.

He is devoted to his future career, and wants nothing more than to become a competent field officer. He likes to read biographies of the great leaders and generals of the past, and finds great pleasure in studying their campaigns.

Born in the village of Runja near Yirgalem in Sidamo Province in 1943 (EC), the fifth child in a family of seven. After attending school at Haile Selassie I Primary School and Ras Desta Secondarc School, Yirgalem, he says that his father and other members of his family advised him to become an officer in the army. He now feels that this advice was well founded. He confesses that riding and hunting are near manias with him. After retirement, he says wistfully, he would like a stable of his own horses.

He is captain of the Academy football team and has also represented the Academy at hockey. His spare time activities are music, hunting, painting and riding. His favourite reading is about the great generals of the past, whom he hopes to emulate one day.

Having visited France this year, he would now like the opportunity to visit other countries.

The fourth child ofa family of five, he was born in Zaia Anbessa, Tigre in 1943 (EC). After attending a number of primary schools he completed his secondary education at Atse Yohannes School.An all round sportsman, he has represented his company at squash, football, boxing and athletics. In hi? spare time he likes reading and walking. He places great importance on professionalism in an army officer’s career, and wishes first of all to be an exemplary officer. However, should the opportunity arise, he would like to qualify as a doctor. He has already been to France, and regards travel as an important way of broadening the mind and getting rid of prejudices about other people.

Born in 1943 (EC), at Baco in Gemugoffa. He was declared Victor Ludorumin the 1965 (EC) Academy Athletic Meeting for winning the 100 metres, 200 metres and shot put. He is also an excellent footballer who has represented the Academy. His particular heroes are Pele of Brazil and MullerofWest Germany. He feels thnat an officer has a great responsibility to guide and train his subordinate, and thinks that discipline does not flow from punishment but depends to a great extent on the character and personal example of the leader.

Born in Wollo in 1943 (EC). The second child in a family offive he attended Asfawossen Primary School, Addis Ababa, and Menelik II Secondarfi School, before coming on to MPPS. As well as representing his company at football and hockey, he won second place in the 400 metres event and third place in the 200 metres in the Academy Athletic meeting. His main leisure hour activities are listening to music, reading and swimming

Born in 1945 (EC). Before coming to the Academy he studied at Haile Selassie I Secondary School, Asmara. He joined the army because he believes that it is one of the best ways of serving his country. He plays almost all games, and has represented his company at soccer and basketball. His favorite hobby is painting and horse back riding and has become quite proficient at both. He also admits to being a bit of a bookworm, and devours just about everything that comes his way, particularly literature and history. Occasionally he likes to get away from the hurly burly and listen quietly to music, in which his tastes are very catholic and range from classical, jazz, traditional Ethiopian to Indian music. The visit to France helped him to become fluent in French and was enthusiastic about all he saw there. When he joined the Academy from HSI Prep School, he was the first to matriculate with Distinction. At his graduation from the Academy, he received several awards from Emperor Haile Selassie. Gold Medal and King Solomon's Silver trophy for standing First in All Subjects. Silver Medal and HIM inscribed Wristwatch for standing First in Academic Subjects. Silver Medal in Military Subjects. He was first in Order-of-Merit from 14 Course.

Born in Serae in 1942 (EC), the youngest child of a family of five. He came to the Academy from Adiugri Secondary School. He is reticent about giving his reasons for joining the army and replies simply ‘to make a living’ but from what we know of him we are sure that there are other reasons which he is to modest to mention. He plays most games, but would be the last to claim any great distinction in them. He has the rather unusual hobby of gardening, and army and replies simply “to make a living” but from what we know of him cherishes a pipe dream of becoming a farmer in the future when he retires

The fourth child in a family of six he attended Princess Taitu School and Kokebe Tsibah Secondary School before entermg MPSS and the Academy. He plays most games and is a keen horseman. His ambition is to go on to the university where he would like to study medicine and become a doctor. He was one of the party that visited France this year and found the trip very interesting.

His interest in science has led him to hope that one day he may have the opportunity to study medicine.

The “baby” of the course was born in 1945 (EC) at Gore’ the second of a family of three brothers .He attended Haile Selassie I Primary and Secondary Schools at Ambo. The childhood attraction of a uniform was later re-inforced by his reading about the exploits of famous generals and it was thus natural for him to join the Academy. His main recreations are sport, music and photography. Since his favourite academic subjects are mathematics and physics, he would like to put them to good use by joining the signal corps where he could apply these subjects to the study of modern methods of communications.

Had he not joined the army he would have liked to have been a farmer, and thinks this is an ambition which he will keep until he retires.

He first got the idea of joining the army while lie was at Dire Dawa Secondary School, for he says there are many uniforms to be seen in that town. His future ambitions are largely concerned with making a success of his military career and liopes one day to hold an important command.

Born the sixth child of a family of nine at Debre Berhan in 1942 (EC). His early education was at Abye Primary School and Haile Mariam Mamo Secondary School. His love of adventure overcame an earlier ambition to be a doctor, and it was this which finally influenced his decision to join the army. He has played volleyball for his company, but his main recreations are handcraft and drawing. He hopes to specialise in some technical branch of the army where he would be able to indulge his interest in science.

Born in 1943 (EC), at Wollega, the eldest child of a family of five. He attended Dej. Gracha School and Maaregie Hiwot Secondary School. He likes quiet pastimes like reading, listening to soft music and going for evening walks, but he thoroughly enjoys a good argument or debate. However, he is not anti – social and plays basketball, volleyball and table tennis with enthusiasm. He is impatient of fancy ambitions, and sees the most important attitude to the future as being prepared to work hard and devote himself to his career.

Born in Addis Ababa in 1942 (EC), the second child in a family of five. He came to the Academy after attending Tefari Mekonnen Primary and Secondary Schools. There is a family tradition of patriotism and soldiering, and he was inspired to join the army by his father’s stories of events during the occupation when he was a freedom fighter. A keen sportsman Tsehaie has represented his company at football and was a member of its relay team in the last athletics meeting. He spends a lot of his leisure reading detective stories, listening to music and going to the cinema.

Born at Debre Tabor in 1944 (EC) the fifth child in a family of six. He received his early schooling at Ebenat Primary School and Gondar Secondary School. When asked why he joined the army, he replied enigmatically, “Because I was meant for it”. As well as representing his company in basketball, football and volleyball, he won the long jump in the last Academy Athletics Meeting. He is passionately fond of Ethiopian music and listening to it occupies a lot of his spare time. He admits to not being particularly ambitious and feels that the future can safely be left to take care of itself.

His ambition is to leave an imprint on the history of Ethiopia.

Joining the army was fulfillment of a childhood wish. Akalu wants to marry early and have done with it, so that he can pursue his first love i-e, to become a doctor – a gynecologist may be!

Assegid joined the army to fulfil his father’s wish, who wanted see him in the uniform of an officer but who unfortunately died when Assegid was in his junior year at the Academy. He is fond of literature, African literature in particular, and is a Chinua Achebe fan. He loves route-marches. Cannot quite decide whether he wants to be a lawyer or a journalist. Assegid represented his company in football.

Graduated from the famous Saint Cyr Military Academy – France. He was serving in the Ethiopian Airborne Brigade before he left the army.

Lieutenant Belete Haile Eyessus
He was born in 1946 in the village of Mekko in Welega Province. He is the youngest but one in a family of eight. He joined the army with the laudable aim of developing a healthy mind in a healthy body. He loves all games but loves basket-ball more in which he represented his coy. He would like to go to Addis Ababa and becomes an engineer. His hobbies are reading painting and listening to music.

The only son in a family of two children was born in Addis Ababa in 1946. Desire to lead men into battle led him to join the army. An all-round sportsman. Belte plays football with distinction. He represented the Academy in football and was captain of the team. His hobbies are stamp-collecting and Latin music. He has insatiable appetite for mathematics and hopes to visit Japan, the country he admires most.
He is missing in action. We will always keep him in our thoughts and prayers.

He was born in 1945 at Debre Sina in Shoa Province. He joined the army for the simplest of all reasons: He wanted to! Bizuwork is a keen sportsman who represented his company in boxing, basketball and volleyball. Gonder Coy won the Inter-Company Volleybau Competition this year under his captaincy. His ambition is to become a doctor.

He was born m 1944 in Addis Ababa. First in a family of ten children Damte was drawn to the army by the glamour of the uniform. He plays all games but squash-rackets is his favourite. He likes to go hunting on week-ends if he can. He believes getting married early in life to a girl who need not be beautiful but well educated and of good character.

He was born in 1946 at Adi Quala. Last but one in a family of eight, Daud believes that army is the only profession in which one can serve his country. He represented his company in football, boxing and athletics. He specializes in 800 meters and 400 meters races. Photography and sketching are his hobbies. Reading or listening to soft music of an evening is his favorite forms of relaxation. He already knows when he is going to get married – on his 27th birthday.

He was born at Ambo in 1944. His earlier intention was to become a farmer and own a big mechanized farm but after joining the army he has decided to dedicate himself to the building of a formidable army for Ethiopia.

He was third in the order of appearance in a family of nine. He was born in Addis Ababa in 1946. Dersha is devoted to his family and clan. He believes in enlightened self-interest. His motto is to help himself, his family and his country in that order! Dersha has played football for his company loves reading and music and wants to specialize in languages – both English and Amharic.

Born on 5 Hamle 1945 at Shoa, more than anything else in life, wanted to be a soldier. Hence he joined the Academy. He is a keen student of history and would like to specialize in that subject. A true son of the soil he believes that only honest leadership in the army can save the country.

Lieutenant Colonel Getahun Demissie
Second in a family of seven was born at Addis Ababa in 1944. Getahun is very proud that he has joined the army. Given his physique it would seem unnatural if he did not. Known for his gentleness he has never-the-less, won shot-put discus-throw and weight-lifting prizes. He represented his company in volleyball and basketball and was also a pilot in the armed forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Getahun Kassa
He heard the “Reveille” and saw the light of the day on 4 Yek 1946 at 0545 hrs at a place called Aleta Wondo. He is seventh in the order of seniority in his family. He plays basket-ball and volleyball and reads science fiction; Math and Physics are his favorite subjects. He does not, repeat not, believe in early marriage. He was a pilot in the armed forces.

He was born at Addis Ababa in 1946. He is the first male child in a family of three. Love of adventure brought him to the army. He has represented his company in boxing. Swimming is his favorite form of relaxation.

The last in a family of three, was born at Assella, on 18 Tekemt 1946. Girma plays all games and has represented his company in boxing, athletics and basket-ball. He loves reading novels and has weakness for novels by African writers. He doesn’t favor early marriage. His ambition is to visit Europe.
He was liked by everyone. He was killed in action as the result of the bitter war in Ethiopia during the DURG era.

The second child of his parent, was born at Arussi in 1945. He joined the army to bring glory to his motherland and to himself. He has also ambitions to win glory in sports. He plays all games and has a curious hobby of visiting law courts. Girma believes there is no shortcut to success. Hence, he believes in hard work.

Seventh in a family of nine, was born at Wollamo Soddo, in 1946. He developed interest in army after joinig the Academy. He played basketball and volleyball for the Academy as well as for his company.

He was born at Axum in Tigray province. He was inspired to join the army after reading the story of Napoleon. He represented his company in basketball and volleyball. His chief interest lies in tactics.

Major Hailesilassie Gebremariam
He was born in the thirteenth month of sunshine, exclusive to Ethiopia, at Adigrat in the year 1944. He wanted to join a university and do post-graduate work but was tempted to join the Academy and receive military training while earning a degree in academics. He loves music and political discussions. After he retires from the army, Haile wants to settle down as a farmer.
